A visa to Vietnam can be obtained online, while a Cambodian visa can be obtained upon arrival at the airport. A British passport allows temporary visa-free entry to some countries in the region. Documents must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry into the country. Printed copies of visas must be kept with your passport at all times for presentation at security checks.
Domestic flights are inexpensive and save time when traveling between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Trains in Vietnam offer scenic views across the mountains and villages along the way. Buses are comfortable and air-conditioned, but roads can be winding in the highlands. Motorbike rentals are popular, but require experience navigating chaotic city traffic.
The weather varies year-round, from the cool north of Vietnam to the hot south of Cambodia. The rainy season makes roads muddy, but the greenery becomes especially vibrant and lush. The best time to visit is from November to March, when it is dry and not too hot during the day. Humidity is high, so drinking plenty of water is essential to prevent dehydration.
The travel budget is low, allowing you to live comfortably on a small amount of pounds. Three-star hotels are inexpensive, and food is affordable, even for students on a budget. Bargaining is common at markets, but in stores, prices are fixed for all customers without exception. Tipping is not mandatory, but gratitude for service is welcome in any establishment.
The culture of both countries is hospitable, and locals are always open to communication with foreigners. A smile can help resolve many issues and establish rapport in any social situation along the way. Traveling through this region broadens horizons and provides food for thought about life. Returning to the UK is filled with new stories and plans for future adventures in Asia.
